Diabetic wounds most commonly affect the feet, toes, and lower legs due to poor blood flow and nerve damage. They often form on the bottom of the foot where pressure from walking is highest.
Common Affected Areas
High pressure points on the bottom of the forefoot or heel from walking can create deep, painful sores. A diabetic ulcer is likely the result of this continued constant force creates tissue breakdown and increases risk of infection.
Toes and joints subjected to repeated rubbing from tight shoes develop blisters and cuts that can worsen quickly if not relieved and protected.
In the lower legs and ankles, poor circulation impairs tissue repair and often leads to slow-healing skin tears or ulcers that require careful wound management and monitoring to prevent complications.
Key Care Steps
Clean gently
Wash the area with mild soap and lukewarm water. Pat dry gently. Do not soak the wound or use harsh chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide or alcohol.
Keep it moist and covered
Apply an appropriate ointment or dressing recommended by your clinician and cover with a clean, sterile bandage to protect the skin and promote healing. Change the dressing as instructed or when it becomes wet or soiled.
Remove pressure
Avoid standing, walking, or putting weight on the sore. Use prescribed offloading devices, special shoes, or boots to relieve pressure and reduce further damage.
Watch for danger signs
Seek medical attention right away if you notice spreading redness, increasing swelling, new or worsening pain, foul odor, pus, fever, or any change that concerns you.
